Before Surgery
Some patients may receive a call at home for a pre-admission interview, or in some cases patients will be asked to come in to meet with a nurse and the anesthesia department. Any diagnostic tests (x-rays, blood work, etc.) are usually done ahead of time on an outpatient basis. This shortens the time you'll need to be at the hospital the day of surgery, and will help you feel more relaxed and in control of your care.
Day of Surgery
Most patients are admitted the day of their surgery. Upon arrival at Parkview Adventist Medical Center, look for the Surgical Registration desk, just inside the doors to the Emergency Room, where our staff will help you register and fill out your paperwork. You may be asked to take a seat in our waiting room where a nurse from the ACU (Ambulatory Care Unit) will meet you and accompany you to the department.
At the ACU your nurse will assess your individual needs, help you go over your paperwork, and confirm identification to ensure the appropriate history and physical and surgical consent is complete. Your nurse can answer questions and help you prepare for surgery.
After your surgery
Some patients require little recovery time in the hospital and may be discharged right after surgery. Many will have a short stay in the recovery room called a PACU or Post Anesthesia Care Unit. A highly trained registered nurse will take care of your needs until you can return to the ACU to be discharged or be admitted to an inpatient hospital unit.
